So right next to Tropicana lies a small taco shop called Tacos Baja. We’ve driven pass this place several times when it was still in the process of being built. I remember thinking, “We’re definitely gonna check it out. This island is in desperate need of some good Mexican food.” Well now that I’ve been here I can tell you that this place sucks donkey dick.

There’s seating outside, where you order, and seating inside.

I am a little perturbed that this place even claims to be authentic. The only thing close to being authentic is the decor, but most certainly not the food.
Ray ordered the combo chicken enchiladas meal, $6.95. It came with rice and beans and 3 enchiladas. I don’t care what anyone says, these were not chicken enchiladas. We all agreed that this tasted more like a chicken Cesar salad wrapped in a corn tortilla. Correct me if I’m wrong, but enchiladas are usually smothered in sauce and melted cheese. It doesn’t even have to be smothered, but some kind of sauce would be nice, even a little. This had no enchilada sauce what so ever, just chicken, lettuce, grated cheese and I think it was a light chipotle cream, that tasted like Cesar dressing because of the cheese that accompanied it. Even eating them were an issue. They couldn’t stay together long enough for him to shovel it into his mouth since there was nothing holding it together.
Rice, beans and dry enchiladas, wow, can somebody get me something to drink. I got cotton mouth just by looking at this picture.
As for me, I ordered shaved ice from Tropicana next door to start and two fish taco. The price for fish varies from market price. I think I paid something like $6.00 for both.

Now don’t everyone go running out the door all at once for some authentic fish tacos. Seriously, cabbage, fish and a corn tortilla, how exhilarating can a these tacos get? If you want fake Mexican food come here and don’t forget to get something to drink. If it’s authentic food you crave, this is not the place for you my friend.

Dude, fish tacos are suppose to come with “cabbage, fish and a corn tortilla”. You obviously haven’t been to baja california.

Well I was born and raised in texas…and enchiladas aren’t suppose to have cabbage. This was one of the many horrible mexican food places in hawaii, that I’ve had the horrible pleasure of trying.

Hey everyone, just wanted to respond to howlieboy who decided to take it upon himself to e-mail me with this comment,
“I found this place to be one of the tastier Mexican options on the rock. You
have a very narrow and ill-informed notion of what a proper enchilada is. These
are among the best I’ve eaten anywhere. Yr review left me with two impressions:
1, that you’re ignorant about Mexican food. 2. that you’re a vituperative
horse’s ass,”
Just so all of you know, I love and appreciate all comments and feedback, whether they be negative or positive. In defense, I’ve lived in California my whole life where every other person is Mexican, some of my closest friends are Mexican, my fiance is half Mexican, and from Texas where the every other person there is Mexican as well. I know what Mexican food is suppose to taste like. Enchiladas are not suppose to be dry. Howlie boy, you might not agree with me, but you are entitled to your opinion just as I am mine. I’m here for my fans and stalkers. If you don’t like what I have to say, get the fuck off my blog. Oh and if you’ve never had an enchilada with melted cheese and verde sauce I highly suggest it. I pity you.

Seems like you know Mexican food. How do you know if it is authentic??? I like your comments. I hope some day you came to Provo, Utah to try our comida Mexicana. If you ever come, I’ll get you 3 dinners for free.
Saludos!
P.S. By the way, enchiladas rojas are not suposed to be drowning in salsa. They should look more like chilaquiles and yes they CAN BE SERVED WITH CABAGE OR LETTUCE. I am sure you know what chilaquiles are if you have Mexican friends.
You are right about enchiladas verdes! Last comment, “Mexican Food in Hawaii needs serious improvement, trust me.. Sorry about my grammar, English is my second language, I was born in Michoacan, Mexico. I hope to get a response from you. With respect, Alfonso Lopez

Alfonso Lopez » I know something is authentic by tasting it. I’m not a professional in everything food but my passion is food, if you know what I mean. Everything I eat I really taste and then mentally critique, this has basil, that’s way too salty, it’s overdone, underdone, etc. which is why I decided to just jot it all down on this food blog. I grew up in California and some of my closest friends growing up are Mexican, like English as they’re second language Mexican too. Also, my fiance is Mexican so I guess I can say I am a little experience in the Mexican Food Department. And yes I totally agree with you, Hawaii is in serious need for better Mexican Restaurants. I don’t know about you but I think a taco truck would be a nice start. Oh, and I will totally take you up on the 3 dinners for free thing if I ever get to Utah. Thanks for the comment and for reading
