Burgers have never been my thing. I know some people that swear by them. I don’t get it. I personally prefer garden burgers to the real thing. I guess that’s why it took me so long to eat at Kua ‘Aina.

kua \'aina

Not very busy today. As you can see all their tables are fully equipped with all the proper tools. More businesses should copy this. I like having everything I need within arms reach, that way I can focus on eating and not on getting up to get what I need or asking and waiting for it.

Along with the abundant amount of seating inside, there’s also ample amount outside.

I feel like chicken today so that’s what I ordered, a grilled chicken burger, $6.90. It came with lettuce, two slices of tomato and a carrot stick. I like it when places give you veggies to munch on, carrot, celery, pickle, whatever I’ll eat it. The sandwich was tasty. No wow factor, but still nice and filling.

Of course carrots aren’t enough to complete my meal so I ordered a side of fries to go with it, $1.95. They were similar to what some might call shoe string fries, the thin, whimpy, flaccid ones. I don’t like this kind. I like my fries the way I like dick, meaty, and not flaccid.

I also ordered a small green salad, $3.40. I was impressed and quite happy with my salad. For $3.40 they certainly filled it up quite nicely with lots of variety and color, just the way I like it.

Also another bonus about this place is that you can B.Y.O.B.  Awesome!

    I went to the Kua’aina in Haleiwa and the one at Ward Center. Not impressed with either of them. Teddy’s Bigger Burger is better. Booyah!

    @Marvo:

    I totally agree. All my friends and myself totally dig teddy’s burger

    LOL! I agree about the fries. They shouldn’t be “flaccid”. Seasoned steak-cut fries (more like wedges) are my fave. The ones from Foodland and Safeway Deli are awesome. Shoestring style gotta’ go. They usually come out either too oily or overcooked and stiff.

    I tried the Haleiwa location, which was just, eh, ok, IMO. I agree with Marvo that Teddy’s got them beat. Especially their fries. They recently been expanding their menu at the Waikiki location too, with some interesting new burger toppings.

    Back to Kua Aina, the salad’s price isn’t too bad for all the goodies they got piled on there. I’ve seen places that serve just iceberg lettuce and diced tomatoes for a similar price.

    Speaking of serving veggies to munch on with sandwiches, you should try A Matter of Taste in Gentry Design Center on Nimitz, just past K-Mart. Excellent quality food, bistro style. Their French Dip Sandwich (with fantastic Au Jus) is the bomb! And they serve it with a carrot stick and pickle wedge, which compliment it perfectly. Great pasta dishes too, and quite reasonable at under $8 for most items.

    Glad to see you’re back DDL!

    I ate at the Kua Aina in Haleiwa in June. Had a mahi sandwich. Fucking delicious. The fish was so fresh I swear I saw it move. My kid had a cheeseburger that had the worst ratio of meat to bun I’ve ever seen. The patty was overcooked, too. My wife got a burger, and it was juicy, meaty and delicious. I think the little one just ordered too small of a patty (or her dad told her to remember that her eyes are often bigger than her stomach). I actually grabbed a plastic knife and made a shitty attempt at cutting off the excess bread by cutting both the top and bottom in half lengthwise, and getting rid of the extra bread (that used to be touching the insides of the sandwich). I’d already messed with it too much for her though, and she pretty much took one more bite, tossed it, and asked to eat again in an hour. I don’t beat her nearly enough. Jesus, this explanation is way too drawn out. Summation: don’t be a cheap ass like me and just get your kid the regular burger.

    As a Haleiwa Boy, I have to agree that the Kau Aina Mahi Mahi sandwich is amazing. The burgers are just standard. Service is in the middle, not bad, not good.
