If your down in Waikiki the International Food Court is probably one of your best bet for fast, affordable food. It’s tucked away between Kuhio and Kalakowa. The picture above is through the side entrance. One of the things I like about the International Food Court is the variety of food that’s offered. Say your in the mood for Chinese, and somebody else wants Korean, and then someone else just wants some ice cream, the International Food Court can make that happen. It’s a beautiful thing. Also, I don’t know about you guys, but I’m a fan of food photos that show you what you will be ordering. Most places here have photos of their food and you place your order by the number system. Photo #1 is order #1, photo #2 is order #2, you get my point. I wish more places would work this way. Pomai from The Tasty Island agrees with me and also mentioned the number system in a recently post on Bob’s.

Lots of outside seating to choose from

I’m a strong supporter of Vietnamese food so Saigon Express is where I tend to pick when I come here.

I got the Look Funn Steamed Pork, $7.00 and #23. My meal was served in a plastic bowl and it came with fish sauce to pour over or dip. I really enjoyed this dish and only wish they had given me more carrots and radishes, oh, and onions. I had to ask for the mint; the photo had it but my dish lacked it. My noodles, or look funn were soft and tasted perfect with the steamed pork. It was a very light dish that didn’t give me constipation, gas, bloating, diarehha, or make me feel like a glutton.

If the Look Fun wasn’t really your thing, then the Shrimp Pad Thai might be, $8.50 and #19 on the menu. This is what my friend Shane’s ordered. I tasted it and it was amazing, but when I looked at it I told him it looked like it had a lot of bean sprouts. He said it didn’t taste that way at all and it didn’t to me either.

Yes there’s another Greek place on the island and it’s located inside the International Market. I think it’s called the Greek Grill, but there’s not really a header above it’s place. This is usually Ray’s pick. He’s a fan of eating cute biblical animals like lamb on a soft warm pita bread.

God must of needed some lambs today because there seemed to be a shortage in Ray’s gyro. He gets this every time he comes here and we remember it being a lot more meaty.

And it was really creamy today. Sheesh, Not a lot of love today, but thankfully just as good as he remembered. And 10 minutes after eating, Ray breaks out into a sweat, another party gone wrong in his pants and he’s left in explosive asshole agony once again. I’m not saying this to deter you from coming here, my honey is just a bit sensitive to cream, or maybe God has a sense of humor after all.

You can really taste the richness and quality over other brands. I don’t usually go to Haagen-Daz stores because like most creameries, it’s a rip off. However, today I had a wild hair up my ass, and yes I’m sure it was a wild hair and nothing else, but I was willing to pay a lot more for a lot less.

Located along the strip of Ala Moana Bombay is probably the first Indian restaurant that tourist encounter. When I first moved here I was thrilled to see an Indian restaurant so close to my home. However, after scanning their menu and checking out the prices I quickly turned around and headed straight out the door. A year later after becoming slightly numb with the bull shit prices around here I decided to give Bombay another shot.

The restaurant is nicely lit with dim lighting. To me this is probably the larger and nicer of the Indian restaurants on the island.

This is Gulab Jamun, $4.95. I saw it on the menu and quickly recognized it as one of my all time favorite Indian treats, grated carrot dessert flavored with rosewater and cardamom and enriched with pistachios and raisins. The thing with Indian desserts is that I could seriously eat all of it in one bite, no joke. It’s always very disappointing, which is exactly how I would describe this dessert. It was very greasy. If I pressed down on it with my spoon long enough, oil would ooze to the top. Along with that it was just overall boring and bland.

We ordered Garlic Nan to go along with our meal, $3.50.

Ray and I shared the Lamb Rogan Josh, $15.95. The menu says it’s tender peeces of boneless fresh lamb cooked in a yogurt based creamy curry sauce, enriched with a select blend of spices, chef’s special. My picture makes the meal look larger than it really was. The scoop of rice was puny, not even enough for one. The lamb was delicious, but for sixteen bucks I didn’t get much of it, just a lot of sauce in a bowl. It seemed more like soup than a dish, and even came with a spoon.

For our dessert I ordered the rice pudding, $3.95. Don’t let my amazing photo skills fool you, the pudding is way smaller than it appears in real life. This was just a close up shot. All of it could of easily fit on a medium size ladle. Like I said before, for some reason Indian dessert is always freaking tiny. Me, being a dessert whore, is a little bitter about this.

Bombay is definitely a place that doesn’t like to give you your money’s worth. The food is forgettable, service was pretty boring and portions are small.

Cruising down Waikiki can be a bit overwhelming. Big name brand shops here, restaurant there, little Asians passing out fliers over there, and more tourist shops here. It’s so much to take in, even for the natives, which is probably why they don’t come to this part of the island, that and they have this idea that we’re taking all their land. I’ve been living in Waikiki for a year now and I’m still uncovering hidden treasures tucked down lonely streets and buried between sky high buildings. There’s a ton of them just waiting to be explored so keep an open eye. I spotted Arancino while strolling through the chaotic streets of Waikiki. I made a turn down a quite road trying to get away from all the commotion and I came upon Arancinos.

Arancino’s is a quaint little eatery. What you see here is all there is, just two small rows of tables. We came here for lunch and as you can see they weren’t very busy.

We started off with a modest loaf of bread. The rosemary on top gives off the illusion of a fresh loaf of bread filled with herbs. It’s an illusion, rosemary was just sprinkled on top, I didn’t taste any herbs here. Ray and I have this one basket rule when it comes to bread but this time I broke it because as you can see, one basket isn’t very much. Ray hated the bread, said it was as boring as bread can be. I didn’t mind it so much with the olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

Glancing over the menu I realized that this was one of those places that look small, cute and inviting, but is actually small, cute, inviting and not so cheap. Well that sucks because I really wanted to like this place and wanted to come back. But I guess I should of known, after-all, it’s still Waikiki right? Oh bother, let’s see what to order to fill us up without raping a hole in my wallet. Ah, here we go, The Margherita Pizza, which is just a fancy way of saying margarita pizza. The menu said it was fresh mozzarella, basil, and homemade tomato sauce, $14.25. I have tasted many margarita pizzas in my time to know that this is a sorry embarrassing example of a margarita pizza. I mean, I know the menu said, mozzarella, basil and tomato sauce, but what about the tomato slice on each piece of pizza, and look at the skimpy amount of tomato sauce, and cheese, and basil. You know those pathetic mini frozen pizzas you get at the grocery store for around $1.79 on sale, those were a million times more exciting than the one you see here. Actually those are fucking amazing when you’re a little buzzed and you’re at home watching a game and drinking beer, I know some of you can relate. Anyhow, Ray and I got to talking and it wouldn’t have taken much to make this pizza a little bit more pleasing. This is what I suggest. Cut up slices of tomato and put one slice on each piece of pizza, add a bit more tomato sauce and cheese, chop up some basil so you get to taste the fresh herb with every other bite and also leave the whole ones for garnish in the center. There you have it, a thousand times better than that sorry piece of shit you guys call a margarita pizza.

If your in Waikiki and you want pizza don’t come here. Take your money to California Pizza Kitchen about 3 blocks away. I usually don’t support corporate places but at least they know what the fuck is going on. But if you do want Italian, just not pizza and you have the cash to burn stay at Arancino and check it out. The place is adorable, the menu looked mouthwatering and service was done with a smile. Happy eating to you.

You know, every so often when the moon is full, the stars are bright and all the planets are perfectly align I feel like being treated to a nice dinner. I had never heard of Tanaka of Tokyo before. Shane said it was like a Benihana’s in the sense that it’s totally table side service and all the food is prepared right there in front of you.

Luckily Ray was smart enough to make reservations. There was a small wait when we got there and then we were escorted to the inner cavity of the restaurant where I all the action went down. It was like we went straight to an underground gambling casino. The place was dark with not a lot of decor on the walls just a bunch of Asians sitting around a large round table, waiting to be dealt out some serious food. The chef puts on a show deals out the food and then, next round of food, deals it out and so on. There were lots of Asians, and commotion going on. Yeah, like I said, It definitely felt like we just stepped into a secret underground casino. How exciting is that.

Everyone is started off with a salad. I suggest you ask for the dressing on the side. No dressing is better than whatever it is that they are using. Even I, the salad whore, could not eat this, pat-tuey. I also ordered a tropical drink, to the right of my salad. It comes with the glass but no worries, a clean one is given to you at the end of the meal so you don’t have to take home a dirty one. Cheers!

This was our chef. Since this was table side service putting on a big show and making your guest laugh is key.

The food, the food, the food is on fire, we don’t give a fuck let the mother fucker burn, burn . . . Just having a little fun.

I don’t remembered exactly what we ordered but I can tell you it was two combination seafood deals at about $40.00-$50.00 each. So this is how it went down, were sat at a round table with strangers. You can make nice with them or ignore them, either way, your sitting with them. We threw everyone a smile and nodded to let them know we were friendly but for the most part we ignored them and they ignored us, this is probably due to the fact that we don’t speak Japanese and like all Japanese they pretend not to speak English. Waiter comes by to takes everyone’s order. Since I’m so use to sharing I was like, “we’ll order this now and if were still hungry we’ll get more later. ” “Uh, yeah, it’s not sushi honey, you have to order everything now,” Ray informs me. He was right, you have to order everything at once, the chef then is given the list and collects all his raw materials in the back, brings it to the table, then kindly introduces himself. When the chef returns everybody shuts the fuck up because we know at places like this it’s more about the show than it is about the food.

Everyone must of ordered the same damn thing because everything our master teppan-yaki chef prepared was dealt out to everyone. He better not be giving our food to everybody else, and if he is he better give us some of their food because sharing is caring bitches. I don’t care if you have a chef knife in your hand I will Shang-hi your ass.

At the end of the meal we were given a choice of green tea, vanilla or chocolate ice-cream to choose from. I got green tea and my honey got vanilla. The green tea was definitely better than the vanilla but my honey begged to differ, which was fine because I didn’t want to share any of it. Overall I am quite pleased with my experience here. The chef was skillful at presenting the food with great flair. Sometimes it’s wise to throw the cheap card out the door.

I forgot to mention that at the beginning of dinner a photographer comes over to the table and takes group photos of everyone. “What the fuck, I’m role playing here and I don’t want evidence of me up in a secret underground casino you dumb fuck, what do you think this is Disney Land? Fuck off,” I gave the photographer my best poker face and kindly took the photo anyway. At the end of dinner he comes back and distributes the freshly developed photos to each group. As he handed me our photo I did what any respected cheap ass would of done if they were in my shoes, I whipped out my camera with a quickness and with the skill of a nimble ninja took a photo of a photo. That’s right bitches, I still had my cheap card the whole time.

Being at the Chart House made me feel as though I were in an old folks community in Florida. I’ve been to Florida once, it was actually the first state I stepped my little foot on. The family that adopted my family over from China are from Florida. I don’t remember the state much but it’s rummer that all old people go there to get away from us youngins. Life starts after 80 and it starts in Florida because it’s a geriatric haven there and here at the Chart House.

See what I mean, nothing but old people, everywhere, and not just old people, but rich old people. They sat us in the cocktail area, right next to a table of four, crazy old ladies day out. Watch out girls gone wild because these ladies were drinking and they were looking for a good time. But it was really uncomfortable because we were trapped in a corner table. The back of my chair was pinned up against another lady’s chair and every time I felt the urge to relax and lean back I hesitated because my back would rub up against hers.

Every time I go to a seafood place by the pier I can’t help but the get the urge to order clam chowder. I feel like if I love the clam chowder, I will more than likely love what’s coming next and if the clam chowder sucks dick cheese then chances are it will taste like dick cheese. The clam chowder cost $4.95 and sucked donkey dick. Great, check please! I didn’t get to taste a clam until I got half way through my soup. I didn’t really care for the flavor much, the potatoes were super mushy, and it looked a bit green, like celery chowder.

For appetizer we got the Hot Sampler, $18.95. It consists of cried chicken wings, fried zucchini, oyster rockefeller and calamari.

They oysters here were delicious, but this sauce they put with it was nasty as hell. It was super heavy, creamy and didn’t mix well with anything in your stomach.

These were the fried calamari and I didn’t care for them much either. The lady next to us seemed to take a liking to these though.

My favorite of the samplers were the fried zucchinis. The were delicious and cut the perfect width to where you get a proper amount of meat in each bite and it was cooked just right, not too mushy or raw. The grated parmeseam cheese on top was a nice touch.

I don’t know why we chose to order more but we did and we really shouldn’t have. This here is the Salmon Linguine, $10.95. As if the fried sampler platter didn’t make us feel like fat bastards enough; this plate really put us over the top. As you can see they didn’t put much care into the presentation of this dish at all. The bottom side of my dish was just bare dry noodles.

I think they cut up the salmon because it gives off the allusion that your getting more salmon than you think. I didn’t mind this because it guaranteed bits of salmon in every bite. The sauce was super rich, creamy and buttery in an instant heart attack kind of way.

Not a bad view during sunset.

With mobs of tourists and an endless supply of pigs in cars, on bikes and even foot ready to give hard criminal jay walking tickets at any given moment. However, where there are mobs of tourist, there are hotels and where there are hotels therein lies restaurants and they’re usually pretty damn good.

Hula Grill is located in the Outrigger Hotel and the best time to come is right before sunset.

That’s not a mural on the wall; it was actually our view.

I really appreciate places that give free all you can eat bread. These were given to us hot filled with herbs and incredibly soft. I usually have a one basket rule but sometimes rules are meant to be broken, this was one of those times. I broke down and had the waiter get me another basket.

On the table laid what tasted similar to the Thai sweet and spicy chili and olive oil. They tasted marvelous with the bread. I don’t suggest it because it’s addicting and what led me to break my one basket rule.

For starters we got Kahuku Corn Crab Cakes with pickled plum aioli, $11.00. It came with three cakes. Although these were called “corn crab cakes, I didn’t really notice any in the cakes. Maybe they’re referring to corn meal? It came with few slices of mushrooms on top along with a fresh green mixture. These were good but a little small. I like my crab cakes with big hearty chunks of crab and I didn’t get that with these. They were cooked to perfection with a nice golden skin on both sides. The best crab cakes on the island is still from the Garlic Restaurant, but these had really nice presentation, which is always a good thing.

For dinner we order the Shrimp Scampi with garlic butter udon noodles, tomatoes and capers, $20.75. The waiter split our order for us so we could each eat off our own plates. Although it was a nice gesture, I would of preferred it if he left it all on one plate, for blog purposes. I’m quite certain that no more than one package of udon noodle was used. I was really disappointed with the amount of noodles we received. The picture made it look like we got way more than what we really did. We got 2 pieces of shrimp each. Not a lot of shrimp but they made up for it in size. These had to be tiger shrimp. The flavor was really tasty  but after the first few bites Ray and I both agreed that this dish was a little too buttery. I felt like my insides were given a lube job.

I’m telling you these shrimp were large.  Besides being slightly too buttery and the small portions, I really did enjoy this dish.

Yes, come right before sunset so you can experience it all. There was also live music in the background, not from here but from down below but we could hear it loud and clear. Overall my experience here was nice. I hate the prices, and food wasn’t mind blowing. I love the shrimp, sunset, music, Ray and feeling like I was on vacation.

We noticed on the way in a picture of a lunch special for $9.00 in the window. It looked like a decent amount of food at a fair price so we decided to give to a shot. Basically, you get BBQ beef, chicken, a dumpling, an egg patty and four sides along with rice. Yeah, I thought it was a nice deal too and as you can see from the picture it was a good amount too.

For my sides I picked tofu, kim chee, seaweed, and glass noodles, all of it came cold. I picked the sides and waited a bit for them to cook the meat in the back. The tofu was solid and tasty, the kim chee was a tad too salty, the seaweed was too seaweedy, if that makes sense, and the glass noodles were really good. The meat was like Yummies good. I liked it but that was the extent of it. There was no love involved.

These noodles were the bomb. It was the only side that we really like and of course it had to be the skimpiest. This is a close up of it and I think we were able to get a bite out of it each. It had a subtle sweet and peppery flavor. Ray was like, how come you didn’t get more of this and less of the other stuff.

The place is covered with drawings and pictures from visitors from all over. Here’s one I found that I wanted to share.

I had to take this one for Ray, since he’s Mexican. I just had to translate it for him since he doesn’t speak or read it.

Anyhow, a few days later I was going through some of my photos and what do I see, a picture of me and my friend Cammie here. We were on vacation in 2005. Haha, I knew I had been here before.

They’re just so good and the perfect appetizer to start off with since they’re light, refreshing and so darn good. These were $3.95 for two. I liked that the shrimp were bright pink because it meant that the shrimp was cooked well, which for me is a good thing.

Listed under the Vegetarian Section of the Menu was these Garden Rolls, $3.95, aka, Tofu Rolls. If your vegetarian or a lover of tofu I highly suggest these. They were just like the summer rolls but with tofu. The tofu still had the skin around and was cut just thick enough to where you can really taste the tofu but it wasn’t overwhelming.

I ordered the Tofu & Green Papaya Salad, $5.95. I guess tofu just sounded good today. The tofu was good, and everything tasted really fresh, but the papaya was shredded a little too thin for my liking. I love basil so it was nice to see it topped with lots of it.

Ray ordered the combination shrimp and chicken fried rice, $5.95. This was a little on the boring side. It lacked flavor. They gave us the small shrimp, which would of been o.k. if more were given. These are the small shrimp, so I know they’re really inexpensive. Also, we didn’t realize there was any chicken in there until we took a closer look.

See, there it is. I took a picture of it next to my fork so you guys have an idea of how small the shrimp and chicken pieces really were.

I would come back for the tofu rolls. Those were a winner in my book. I don’t know why more places don’t offer them. I would think they would be a better investment than the traditional summer rolls. Everything else was mediocre.

I have this mental list of places that I must try just because every time I drive by there’s this crazy line out the door. It’s just one of those things were I need to know what all the fuss is about. Ray says that he’s been to Wailana a few years back and that I would love the prices but hate the food. I was sold on the cheap price part and as for the food, I’ll be the judge of that.

We came here one day and I was like sweet, no line. Usually, when we drive by there’s this ridiculous line out the door. However, this is what we walked into. Apparently, the line ended at the door so we had to squeeze in and stand to the side.

The place is a lot bigger once inside and is even bigger than the room you see here. Once you get to the end of this room, you walk in through the open way and there’s a whole other room, which is where we were seated.

This is the same room, but just to the right of it.

The glass is half full because Ray was thirsty and impatient. This puny glass of chocolate milk cost us $1.85. It was like two big gulps. Rip off.

Ray ordered Strawberry Waffle with Whipped Cream, $6.60. As you can see this is what a real waffle should look like. Not like the weak waffles from Eggs and Things. Ray was happy with his pick and so was I, since I took several bites of it throughout our meal.

He also ordered one Egg, $2.35. They were scrambled and not layered like how some restaurants make them. They were good eggs.

Shane got French Toast, $6.95. These were good but not amazing, just really basic tasting French toast.

I ordered the Pancake Sandwich, $6.35. It was sausage, bacon or ham and one egg with two buttermilk pancakes. As you can see I chose sausage and had my eggs done over hard. Again, everything was good. I put my egg between my pancakes and sliced up my sausage and places each slice ever so gently between each pancake as well so it was like pigs and dead chicken babies in a blanket. Yum!

Overall, we were all quite content with our order. As for the prices, I have to say we were disappointed. Ray and Shane have been here before so they were able to compare prices from the last time they were here and the whole time they were deciding on what to eat all they kept saying was, “wow, the prices went up.” I know it sounds like I’m being a little too hard since the prices were decent, but I had been so pumped up on how cheap this place was. I was expecting like $3.99 plates you know. Apparently, that’s what they’re known for, that and being open till the wee hours of the night. How can you not appreciate places that are so accommodating to the drunks. Like ugly people, food always looks and taste better when drunk. It’s funny because I mention it to my coworkers that I had made a visit here one morning and Sara goes, “oh, you should never go there unless your drunk.” And then Brian concurs by saying, “yeah, don’t go there unless your ready to have some drunken food. Food is so good there when your drunk.” There you have it folks, don’t come here unless your drunk. That was one mistake we wont make again.

Sara got the Blueberry Waffle, $7.50. This was really good, but not really what I expected their waffles to be like. I saw big thick waffles in my head you know. This place is know for having ginormous dishes. Come on guys, step up your game.

Shane got the Coconut Waffle. He loved it and could not have been happier. Oh, Shane, such a stoic, easy to please man.

Ray got the Banana Waffles, $7.50. He said they were great, but soon regret his order when he laid eyes upon Justin’s plate.

I took this picture to show just how thin this waffles were, thinner than pancakes. The bananas tasted really fresh and were bounteous. Now don’t get me wrong, everyone loved them, but some people have preferences. If you prefer thin waffles you should fucking come here if you don’t order something else.

Since everyone else got waffles I decided to go with crepes, that way I could take a little bit of waffle from everyone else and still have my crepe. Lesson #1, think like a fatty, just don’t look like one. The great thing about crepes is that you don’t really get any surprises with them, they’re thin pancakes, they will always be thin, if they come out thick, someone fucked up and you got pancakes instead. I ordered the Strawberry Rolled Crepe, $8.95. I love crepes, but as a lone ranger. Somehow every time I order them filled I end up being disappointed. This time was no different. The menu said they were, “delicate thin pancakes.” I should of taken that to heart because, delicate they were. By the time I got to my second crepe, it started to crumble and deteriorate. It literally dissolved into such small pieces that it made eating with a fork a skill. Let this be a lesson to me.

Justin got the Potato, Bacon and Cheese Omelet, $10.75. All omelette’s are made with three fresh eggs and come with pancakes, rice or potatoes. As soon as Ray laid his eyes upon Justin’s dish he knew he had ordered the wrong dish. Then he tasted it and it only confirmed that this dish should belong to him. Justin said, “ten out of ten, I give this dish a ten, it couldn’t have been better.”

These are they pancakes that it came with. For $10.75 this dish could easily be shared by two. There you have it, guys. That’s their secret, fantastic omelette’s.

Alright guys, it’s story time. So just as we’re finishing up with our breakfast I notice the this ginormous milkshake the waitress has in her hand. My eyes are fixed on her as she walks right next to my table and hands it to this cute Japanese girl. All of them do the cute, little Japanese giggle. Ray tells me to stop staring, but I can’t, I’m memorized. “Fuck you, mind your own business,” I say and then I turn to the cute Japanese, smile, and nod my camera to her, which is code for, “may I take your picture?” She nods, I gesture for her to pick up the milkshake, she willingly obliges. Japanese girls are so adorable.

After the disappointing creme brulee at the Garlic Restaurant we decided to have dessert elsewhere. I remembered a few days before Ray and I had this awesome little chocolate cake at the new Coffee Bean inside the Food Pantry and Sara’s been meaning to try this Red Forest Cupcake they have so everyone was sold on the idea. For those of you that don’t know, the Coffee Bean is the newest addition to Food Pantry down in Waikiki. In my opinion it was a great idea. The Food Pantry was looking a little old and outdated but now that the coffee bean is there it looks a little more fresh and welcoming. There’s one table outside and a few inside.

One reason I love coffee shops so much is because they always seem to have the best varieties of pastries at a very affordable price.

Here it is, the awesome little Hostess Cupcake Ding Dong knock off,$2.29. It’s like finding a Nike shoe knock off in a small shop in China and realizing that you like the knock offs better because they have a certain graphic design and comfort you won’t find from the original. This cake was delicious, so much better than the original in looks and taste. It had a thick fudge-like skin sheltering a soft chocolate cake that covered a sweet creme core. Yum!

Here’s a picture of an original hostess cupcake ding dong so you can compare for shits and grits.

Sara’s little Red Forest Cupcake, $1.99 and not worth it even if it was given to us for free. This was the driest cupcake ever. Sara was so disappointed. She’s had her eye on this cake for a while now, eye-fucking the hell out of it every time she walks by, and now that she’s finally had a taste she couldn’t have been more let down. Seriously, don’t be fooled by its looks, this cupcake was dry like Oprah’s pussy. Sara started eating it and the top just fell right off.

This is Sara’s way of saying, “Fuck you Red Forest Cupcake, you suck donkey dick!”

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Brownie, $1.99. Shane was happy with his pick.

I ordered the most adorable carrot cake I’ve ever laid my eyes upon. I just have to say, I love pastries like this, where I can have my cake and eat it too. I don’t want to buy a gigantic whole cake that I probably can’t even fit into my refrigerator, so I’ll have to leave it out only to find a trail of ants next morning, carrying pieces of it back home.

This was good, no more no less. I ate half of it only to find that I really didn’t like it by the time I reached the second half so I stopped eating it. I definitely wasn’t fresh because it was a little dry, but not as dry as the red donkey dick cupcake. I’m sure if it had been fresh I would of loved it.

That’s it folks. Besides a few mocha’s and lattes we had a great time winding down at the Coffee Bean.

So I can’t get enough of this place. Here we have a picture of the Pumpkin Crunch, $2.19. It was tasty, but I think they should rename this pumpkin treat because there was no crunch whatsoever. The bottom was chewy, and perhaps it was once crunchy but got soggy and chewy from the moisture of the pumpkin filling. And if that’s the case, well then it just leads customers to believe that they had just purchased an old dessert. If it’s not the case, well then having the word “crunch” in the dessert is misleading and customers will think that they have just been deceived. Either way, not very good. I suggest Pumpkin Dream. But like I said, it was tasty, I was just a bit disappointed because there was no crunch to be had.

On a separate day, I came home from work realizing that I still haven’t had dinner. It was late, I was tired and the only thing that sounded good was some dessert. Ray and I walked over to The Coffee Bean and purchased this little Coconut Bunt Cake, $3.29. It was a plain white cake, with white frosting and coconut shavings all around.

It was good, but I was bored with it by the time I got half way through. It was yummy, but nothing special.

This time I came home from a horrible night at work. Oh, work, it’s like this love hate relationship I have with you. But, I have to say I hate you more than I love you, sorry. I was venting out my night to Ray when he decided it was time to go get some sugar. How is it that food, in my case, dessert, can completely transform people. Is this what it’s like to be bipolar? As soon as I stabbed my fork into this Chocolate Indulgence, $3.29, laid it upon my tongue to compressed it up to the roof of my mouth and smear it all around I felt whole again. Chocolate Indulgence, you complete me.

Chili’s, yet another chain. Hey, I’m not a huge fan of Chili’s either. As a matter of fact I got fired from Chili’s years ago for drinking on the job. Can you believe that shit? And after everything I’ve done for them. Whatever I don’t hold grudges, I get revenge by writing them a horrible review. Just kidding. Like I said, I don’t know how to lie so here goes, I think Chili’s hires only illegal Mexican immigrants. No joke, when I use to work there, not this one but one in California, all they had back there were Mexicans. There’s not a chance in hell a White or Chinese person could get a job as a cook or dish washer. I don’t care how good their resume looks and trust me affirmative action won’t be there. Now I know there’s not a whole lot of Mexicans here on the island but I have a hunch that most of them, except for Ray, are working illegally there.

Lets get to the nitty gritty shall we. Ahhhhh dessert, how I love thee, let me count the bites. Seriously, this Molten Chocolate Cake $7.99, is so good I want to smear it all over my body and make love to it, only it would burn me because it’s freaking hot, so I have to settle for putting it in my mouth. It’s a scoop of vanilla ice cream covered with a hard chocolate shell on top of a bed of warm chocolate cake filled with hot chocolate fudge. There are times when it’s worth ever cute dimple on your ass to indulge, this is one of those times.

Here’s a repeat just in case you missed the first one.

The funny thing is, Ray and I came here to be somewhat healthy. I mean we did have the best of intentions by ordering a salad and sharing it. This is the Quesadilla Explosion, $12.99. “Fajita marinated chicken, corn relish, mixed cheeses, cilantro, diced tomato & crispy tortilla strips. Garnished with a chipotle ranch drizzle & cheese quesadilla wedges. Served with citrus balsamic dressing.”

Yeah, it’s probably not very healthy at all. It was alright. Ray really likes this salad. If you want my advise, go to Costco, they have this fiesta salad mix that’s to die for, with dressing and all. Swing by Chinatown, where produce is cheap, and pick up a white onion, tomato, lime, and cilantro. Chop it all up, mix up the salad, squeeze some lime juice in and a splash of tabasco if you like it spicy, throw in the dressing and there you have it one of the best salads ever. It would kicks this ones ass.

A fan of Chili’s but not all the tourist that flock round Waikiki? Well then I suggest taking a trip over to Kahala. I’m too really a fan of Chili’s but Ray is so whenever he gets his Chili’s cravings we compromise by going over to the one in Kahala. I like this one so much more. First, the location along is worth the drive. We don’t have to deal with crowds of tourist. Second, the ambiance is in better taste. I notice that I don’t have a photo of the inside of the Chili’s in Waikiki, but it’s like the Chili’s you see everywhere else. It’s a clutter of outdated photos from 1970 and 80′s, of when they use to be involved in the community. I hate the cluttered look at restaurants. To me they convey, “hey we have no designing skills so we’re just going to put all kinds of random shit everywhere and hope it looks good.” Anyway, I think the old designer of Chili’s got fired because this is what the Chili’s at Kahala looks like

What an improvement. I think they should redesign all the old Chili’s to look like this. There’s no clutter anywhere and tons of natural lighting fills the room.

There’s also bar seating, which is where we decided to sit to mix it up a bit. Well, not really. There was a 40 minute wait, so it was wait or sit at the bar. We took the bar.

It seems as though every time I come here I end up eating these Southwestern Egg rolls, $9.79. A good thing too because they are so so good. They’re filled with smoked chicken, black beans, corn, jalapeno jack cheese, red peppers and spinach all wrapped inside a crispy flour tortilla and served with this amazing avocado ranch dipping sauce. I love them when I’m eating them, but hate them when I see the bill. At $9.79 for 6 half pieces, that’ only three eggrolls, which means I paid over three dollars for a stupid eggroll. Fuck you Chili’s for making a delicious egg roll so good that even cheap ass me will bend my wallet just to get my hands on one. Fuck you straight up your sweet pie hole.

Chili’s sure knows how to dress up a simple salad. This was a basic salad, with Romain lettuce. Add tomatoes, croutons and cheese and you have a pretty desirable salad. We ordered this salad with our meal for $3.99 but if you order it alone it cost $5.29.

This was Ray’s pick, The Old Timer with Cheese, $9.49 and cheese cost an extra $1.00. It’s a basic burger with lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles and lettuce. Ray couldn’t have been happier with this pick. I took a bite and admit it was a good burger, but just so you know, a great burger doesn’t impress me. I’m not a burger whore, but Ray, he’s from Texas, so let’s just stereotype here and say all Texans are burger whores. I remember after dinner Ray was like, “wow, that was a really good burger. It was so juicy and just really hit the spot.” And I was like, “yeah, yeah, it’s a fucking cow, get over it. Hey do you want any dessert?” Anyway, it impressed Ray so much that about a week later we were back and Ray ordered the same burger.

Shane, our roommate ordered the Triple Dipper, $12.99. I’m a fan of this dish because you get a variety of choices to choose from: boneless Shanghai wings, southwestern eggrolls, boneless buffalo wings, wings over buffalo, chicken crispers, spinach and artichoke dip and fried cheese. You get three picks. He chose two servings of the southwestern eggrolls and spinach and artichoke dip.

This post is long overdue and I apologize for that. I try to keep my post as current and fresh as possible. As most of you already know, I’m still somewhat new to this island. Ray and I made a bold move back in March and dropped everything just to move out here. We didn’t have internet at first, but luckily the hotel next to us did, Ray’s computer was strong enough to grab it but it was slow and he needed to get work done. He searched for places that offer free wifi and are within walking distance online at wififreespot.com. Coconut Cafe was on the list and really close so we decided to pack up our laptops and have lunch there.
The place is extremely small, not really an ideal place to work. I think there were 3 tables and all two seaters. We scan the menu and this is what we got.

Ray ordered the Seafood Mixed Sandwich, $4.99. All sandwiches are served with your choice of lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, cheese, cucumbers, carrots, mayo, and mustard. He said this sandwich didn’t taste right. The seafood tasted bad like it had been sitting there in a tuperware container for a while. I took a bite and it tasted a bit mushy. I’m not a fan of seafood sandwiches unless it’s grilled.

I also forgot to mention that online it states that internet was free, which was the reason why we went there in the first place. Udon Ramen is a pretty basic place as far as sushi goes. Actually, I think that any Japanese place that offers .99 cent sushi rolls can be considered very basic. Hey, I’m not hating on it. I know some people are sushi snobs, just like some people are wine snobs, but I’m not. I really appreciate .99 cent sushi rolls. It’s not creative or artsy for sushi, but hey, you can’t deny that fish, rice and sushi paper just taste good together no matter how its put together.

Tamago (egg) and unagi (fresh water eel) rolls. .99 cents each.

Ray splurged and got a california maki (crab meat with avocado and cucumber) $4.95.
That’s my honey, Ray. In case your wondering, no that’s not shit on his face. No, he wasn’t looking for love in all the wrong places. What is wrong with you people? Shane dared him to walk out with pudding in his face, so he decided to make good use of the pudding and next thing I know, Ray’s slapping chocolate pudding on his face and we’re on our way out the door.
Ray has this theory that food taste better when someone else makes it. Ray eats quite well because he’s less of a cook than I am. I’m going to take his theory one step further and say food taste even better when someone else makes it and when it’s free.
We pass by Perry’s Smorgy Restaurant often and not once had I the desire to give it a try, that was until Shane said he has a friend that works the counter and would gladly give him and his friends a hook up. And just like that Perry’s Smorgy sounded rather appealing. Hey, why judge a book by it’s cover.
Once in, nothing looked appetizing, so when I doubt eat sugar.
Fruit is a great way to end a meal.
Shane’s plate
In conclusion, the free part of this meal was huge. I don’t think we would have eaten it if we actually had to pay for it. After testing and our hypothesis in a contained environment we can say with 100% certainty that food not only taste better when someone else makes it but it will taste better when it is free as well. If you plan to pay, I suggest you take your money elsewhere but if your stubborn breakfast is $7.95, lunch is $8.95 and dinner is $11.95.

Formerly known as Catch of the Day, G Sushi will give you a run for your money. If you like Genki Sushi you will probably like G Sushi. Like Genki they place their sushi on a lazy susan and color cordinate their dishes. Yellow plates are $1.39, green plates are $2.19, pink plates are $2.69, etc. Also, if you don’t see anything you want you can order off the menu.

Shane’s turned us on to this deep fried spicy tuna. It’s like a deep fried golden sushi nugget. For $2.69 I’m so sold. I haven’t been able to find anything like it sence. This is the sole reason Shane and I return to this place. Nothing else matters. If you haven’t had it you have no idea.

This dumpling was floating by and I decided to give it a try. I have no idea what it is or called as it was not even on the menu. I ate one before I remembered to take a picture. It looks better than it tastes which confirms that all you need to know about this place is the deep fried spicy tuna is golden, nothing else matters.

I almost forgot to mention, don’t forget to ask for a frequent customer card there. For every $10.00 spent you get a box stamped and a full card means $10.00 off your next meal. I think that’s a pretty sweet deal considering that $10.00 can easily buy me lunch there.

Growing up, my parents owned a small Chinese restaurant call Golden Dragon in a small town in California. I worked there since I was in the 5th grade up until I transferred to San Francisco State University. Since then, my Chinese food consumption has gone down tremendously. Could it be that nothing compares to ma and pops traditional cooking or that I actually have to pay for food now or both?

Anyhow, The Golden Eagle is fairly close to the University Hawaii, which means it’s more than likely going to be affordable. Ray and I shared the Seafood Chow Fun. It’s Ray favorite Chinese dish, next to me of course.

This dish cost us $11.49 and that’s including tax. It wasn’t on the menu, but here’s more free knowledge I’m willing to share with you. When your dinning at a Chinese restaurant you can basically have anything you want. Money talks and if you want it and the Chinese has it, they’ll gladly make it for you . . . for a small fee of course. Next time your out for Chinese and you think to yourself, “man, Mongolian beef sounds good, but I’ve had way too much red meat lately. I really wish they had Mongolian chicken instead.” Order it, It’s your world sweet cheeks, you can have anything you want, but make sure you bring cash because Chinese no like paying tax and a lot of places will not settle for anything less.

Back to the food. It was delicious. Generally, when you order chow fun, which is rice noodles, the waiter will ask you if you want it wet or dry, which means do you want it with or without sauce. I suggest with and that’s the way we ordered it. It was everything we had hoped and more. The vegetables were fresh and crispy. It was flavorful without being too salty. The service was good and we even got free tea, but no fortune cookie. That’s o.k. I don’t need a cookie to tell me how my life’s gonna turn out, that’s what I pay Sylvia, my psychic, for. Here’s my fortune cookie fun fact of the day for you, fortune cookies are an American invention, just like chop suey. Desserts were not traditionally part of Chinese cuisine, and the cookies thus offered Americans something familiar with an exotic flair. Who would of thought, writing a message in a freaking cookie could be so popular. I think we should take this a step further and start writing subliminal messages on toilet paper so after we’re done with our reading material we could wipe our ass with something really really special.

As for the cheese steak sandwiches, I have yet to find out. I ordered the Ono Philly Chicken, Cheese & Mushroom Sandwich. Sandwiches come in three sizes, 7″, 10″ and 16″. Ray and I shared the 10″ for $7.19. All sandwiches come with your choice of cheese, grilled onions and hot or sweet peppers all placed inside an Amoroso roll that’s apparently imported for Philadelphia. We also got a small order of steak fries for $2.19. Ray didn’t want any onions and I gave him most of the mushrooms because I love him and wasn’t really all that hungry. Another great thing about this place is that they are open 24/7. That means after the clubs when your all drunk and incoherent you don’t have to settle for hot dogs any more. If hot dogs with florescent green relish tastes good when your drunk just think how good these babies will taste, fucking incredible.

After we ate, we walked over to Star Bucks and opened up our lap tops. Hey, we’re still paying customers, just not Star Bucks.

Word on the street is that Genki Sushi in Japan is the equivalent to a McDonalds in America. It’s fast food that’s cheap. If you ask me, anything is better than McDonalds, but lets compare for shits and grits. Genki Sushi will kick that clown in the ass when it comes to speed. There’s really no way to be any faster. As soon as you sit that sweet ass of yours down you can start making it fatter, or phat-er (pretty hot and tempting) because sushi is floating ever so gracefully on a boat, or plate, just waiting for the opportunity for someone to turn it into a fob, aka, F.O.B. fresh off the boat. Hey, everyone loves a Fob, that’s why I’m so popular. If there’s something that you want and it’s not floating by, you can order it. That’s right, real live fobs walking around, ready to take orders in exchange for American citizenship. Also, the plates are color coordinated for all those retards out there. Gold plates are $1.40, green plates are $2.00, red plates are $2.60, etc. Hey, if your a cheap ass stay away from the silver and black plates, they’re $3.75 and $4.60.

Don’t let the name fool you. If your in the mood for European food this isn’t the place for you. I think the only thing that can be considered French here is the croissant and the French bread or baguette that the sandwiches are made with. At lot of Vietnamese dinning establishments will refer to themselves as “French” this is because in 1900 Vietnam became a colony of France with the French in control of all the levels of government. That all for the fun facts lets get on with the food. I got a steamed pork sandwich. If you have never had a Vietnamese style sandwich and your totally open to trying new things, then you should definitely have one. I’ve been eating steamed pork sandwiches ever since I was a little girl. My mom use to take me to the Vietnamese sandwich shop in San Jose, California. I love them. However, they aren’t for everyone. My fiance absolutely loves sandwiches, but refuses to even try these sandwiches. He won’t even take a bite because he says he already knows he’s not gonna like it.

A very friendly China-men greeted me at the window. I don’t know if he was nice to me because I was of the same ethnic background and spoke to him in Cantonese or maybe he was physic and knew I wrote a food blog and he wanted me to give him a good review. I guess we’ll just never know.

A typical “French” (Vietnamese) sandwich will consist of cilantro, steam pork meat, sweet and sour (pickled) radishes and carrots, meat paste spread, mayonnaise, raw hot peppers and sometimes cucumber.

The sandwich cost me under $5.00. I asked for extra pickled radishes and carrots and it was given with no additional charge. Pickled radishes and carrots are used a lot in Vietnamese food. I brought my sandwich home and ate every last bite.

Among sandwiches they also have milkshakes, fresh coconut, fruit, and shaved ice. Yum. The French cafe is located in the heart of Waikiki on Kalakaua St inside the International Market Place. There’s a large food court there so if you don’t fancy yourself a “French” sandwich that’s cool, eat something eles.

Where I’m from, there’s one Indian restaurant for every hooker, not that I’ve ever even seen a hooker at an Indian restaurant but the numbers are about the same. There’s not many Indian places to roam to here on Oahu but at least there’s better looking hookers. The fist Indian place I found was too expensive to write about so I kept searching. I did, however, run into another Indian restaurant the other day in China Town. Shane, Ray and I went to Maunakea Market Place on Maunakea Street. We followed our instincts through two sets of red doors that led us to a secret underground food court, or at least that’s what it felt like. The place was dark and dingy. A mixture of lumpias, basil and fish filled the air. I was in hole in the wall central and I could not have been happier. I quickly scanned the isle for all that this place had to offer me. There was a mixture of Filipino, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean and even to my surprise, Indian food. If your not familiar with Indian food I think It would be best for you to mentally prepare yourself beforehand. Their dishes tend to be shades of greens, yellow and brown and consists of meat or vegetables usually in some sort of sauce. So picture meat chunks in dark sauce. It’s like sick baby hippo shit, and yes, I do know what sick baby hippo shit looks like; I see it all the time. Yum, not hippo baby shit but Indian food. It’s delicious. It just takes getting use to looking at if your not accustom to it, or at least it did for me. I haven’t had Indian since I’ve moved, so of course I had to have it.

This place was called Indian Food Curry and BBQ, not much thought put into naming it but hey nothing wrong with keeping it simple. Ray and Shane joined my band wagon and decided upon Indian as well. The food laid behind a glass window, where you pick two choices for $5.00, three choices for $6.00 or all you can eat for $6.99. I choose all you can eat. I was given rice and a little of everything else. If you’ve already had Indian before then you would know that It’s not worth having unless you have it with nann, which is delicious, hot, mouth watering, melts in your mouth, bread, at least that’s the nann the bay area has spoiled me with. The nann here was not hot out of the oven and cost an extra $1.oo. I was hungry and so excited to eat Indian, so the first few bites were amazing but as I kept eating I soon lost interest.

Honestly, the food was satisfactory. Service, though, was fabulous. It was obviously family owned and operated. The father was kind and generous. His daughter came over later and gave me a sugary treat on the house after I had already sat down to eat. I want to say that my experience overall was delightful. I love hole in the wall places that are family owned and operated especially when it’s done with a smile and that was exactly what this place was. For directions click below.

O.k this is for all you skinny cows, I found a place that is definitely worth mentioning. It’s healthy, scrumptious and they have cute little employees – females, to serve you. The first time Ray and went to the health bar was a few weeks back after hiking Diamond Head. We had originally intended on going to Bogarts, a cute little cafe right next door, but they were way too busy. We were famished and decided on going next door to the Health Bar.

The place had an artsy island atmosphere. The menu was written on chalk board above where young, inviting employees worked. Now I didn’t say the place was cheap. Actually, I thought, as most health places are, a little overpriced. Throw organic, or health on something only means more money. I was going to order a smoothie for 5.25 but Ray notice this bowl that two girls at a near by table was munching on. It looked like a smoothie in a bowl, with stuff in it. I went over and asked them what they were eating and if it was any good. The girl’s eyes popped out of her skull as she said, “it’s the acai bowl and it’s sooo good.” Alright, I’ll have one of those. If it had the power to do that to her round little eyes just think of what it could do to my slanty wide screen vision eyes. I had to know. Da Cove Bowl is like a fruit smoothie, with acai fruit, mixed berries, banana, strawberry and granola and topped with honey for $6.50. The Mana Bowl is two dollars more, $8.50 because it has more acai fruit and includes bee pollen. Now, if your like most people your probably thinking, “what the fuck is an acai fruit? And bee pollen? No thanks, I have allergies”

I’ll start with the acai fruit. Acai (pronounced ah-sigh-EE) is from Brazil’s Amazon rain forests and is the fruit of a palm tree. Here are some benefits of acai berries.

Greater Energy and Stamina

Improved Digestion

Better Quality Sleep

High Protein Value

High level of Fiber

Rich Omega Content for Your Heart

Boosts Your Immune System

Essential Amino Acid Complex

Helps Regulate Cholesterol Levels

33x the Antioxidant Power of Red Grapes and Red Wine

Acai is also loaded with Vitamins B1, B2, B3, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Phosphorus, Calcium, Potassium, Fiber, and Proteins, all essential to your daily well being and health.

As for bee pollen, the nutrients found in Bee Pollen include polyphenols, enzymes, beneficial fatty acids, free amino acids, vitamin complexes, chelated minerals and trace elements, as well as a large array of phytonutrients. Since the nutrients in Bee Pollen are extremely concentrated even a small amount will complement any diet. Perhaps it’s worth the extra two dollars for the extra acai fruit and bee pollen.

Uhh, not when you cheap. Ray got the Da Cove Bowl, and I splurged and got the Mana Bowl. We sat outside and waited and waited and waited. I went inside to see what was taking so long. Did they forget about us? I mean, the only other people in there were the bug eyed girls. I stood in front of the counter making sure my presence would go unnoticedd. The two girls behind the counter chatted away, taking their sweet time, even stopping every so often to make hand gestures or stop in awe of what the other had to say. Hello, Blondie, and Miss Asian Persuasion, are you dense?. You throw all the ingredients into the blender and press the button. After 30 minutes of waiting we finally got our order. One word, orgasmic. I forgot to add that you get an option of chewy or crunchy granola. We both chose crunchy. Not only do they put granola atop but also there is granola at the bottom so you don’t have to worry about trying to make it last. The bee pollen has a subtle sweet taste that you probably wouldn’t even notice if you didn’t see it. This is the ideal treat for a hot day. It’s light, refreshing and healthy. The Health Bar is close to Diamond Head so after your vigorous hike you can reward yourself to a healthy treat and still feel good about it. Now if smoothies aren’t your thing they also offer other items such as, fish wrap – $9.25, veggie omelet- $8.00, fish salad – sm $10.25, lg $13.50, hummus – $8.75 and fresh squeezed juice for $6.50. $6.50? I could buy at least two cartons of juice for that much. I never said this place was cheap and they definitely don’t have supersonic service. Here’s my advice, order one Mana Bowl over the phone ahead of time and share it. One is large enough for two if your not hungry. The number is 808 732-8744, Drink water, it’s free, healthy and, thank God, self serve. If you want more information, here’s a link to their web site

Looking for something other than Asian food? Well I got a place for you. Today Ray and I decided to go grocery shopping. It’s sad but since we arrived here I’ve attempted to cooked once, and it was a crappy breakfast burrito. Even though I’m not all that domesticated, I know I’m better than that, so I went out to redeem myself. Outside of Don Quijote Grocery Store lies a food court. It’s perfect for the hungry shoppers that just can’t wait. Besides, shopping on a hungry stomach only makes your eyes bigger than your stomach which will only cause you to spend more money on food you really don’t need and then you will get fat. That’s not cool. I say, go ahead, explore your options, eat some food. There are a wide array of options here, Korean food, Chinese food, Italian food, a bakery, Japanese, and Greek. I decided on Leo’s Taverna Express Healthy Greek Food. They had lamb gyros for $4.95. Some people aren’t too keen on the idea of eating cute little lambs, and a lot of people just aren’t accustomed with this meat. I love lamb, especially when I eat Indian food. Lamb is very tender and delectable. Unless your a vegetarian, or it’s against your religion I urge you to try it. These gyros were hefty. Large people or people with a large appetite should order two, otherwise there’s really no reason to order more than one. It consists of lamb, lettuce, diced tomatoes and cucumber sauce within a soft warm pita bread. Yum. Yeah, It’s o.k. to order another one, it’s worth the fat, and besides according to Leo, it’s suppose to be healthy. The menu also had other items such as hummus for $4.75, Chicken Wrap for $6.95, and a Greek Salad for $7.25. Enjoy!
